1971年，一直默默無(wú)聞的美國(guó)民謠歌手Don McLean（唐·麥克林）在靈感泉涌中寫下了一首超長(zhǎng)的歌曲《American Pie》（美國(guó)派），一夜成名，American Pie（1971年）發(fā)行之后，同名專輯隨即推出。其中他為畫家凡高所寫的Vincent (Starry Starry Night)，也非常受歡迎。在他成名后，首張專輯里的and i love you so則被資深歌手Perry Como看上而予以翻唱，也在排行榜上造成了轟動(dòng)。Don Mclean歌聲純樸自然、毫不做作，加上詩(shī)般的意境，很多人都慕名前去欣賞他的演唱，有人形容他的歌聲具有溫柔的殺傷力。一位女明星在慕名聽過(guò)他的演唱后，更請(qǐng)專人替她把感受譜成歌曲，就是后來(lái)由黑人女歌手Roberta Flack 唱紅的Killing Me Softly With His Songs
